Insurance adjusters have brought more drones with them to Texas in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey to help assess the damage quickly. This technology is being used more frequently for damage assessment but its practical use in relief efforts was less. The drones are tethered and hover over the area of hankamer in Texas, searching for signs of damage. Drones are not the only tool that the red cross has to help affected communities.

At&t

AT&T is using drones to test connectivity and cellular coverage for disaster areas in Texas as part its ongoing efforts to help the Texans impacted by Hurricane Harvey. These drones can be more precise and safer than ground maintenance crews. These drones can also report back with photos or HD video, giving first responders an aerial view of a cell site. But what is AT&T's drone capable of?

PrecisionHawk

PrecisionHawk Hurricane Harvey drone pilots used DJI Matrice100 multicopter helicopters fitted with Zenmuse Z30 aerial cameras. With up to 30x optical zoom, these cameras capture stunning photos and video. PrecisionHawk pilots prepared drones and crews ahead of the disaster. They brought multiple batteries and assembled at a utility operations centre. These pilots had been through extensive training and were highly skilled in emergency management, planning missions, and safety procedures.

NCDOT

In preparation for Hurricane Harvey, NCDOT launched 15 drone teams near areas that were expected to be impacted by the storm. NCDOT drones were ready to perform all flight operations in accordance the Federal Aviation Administration's Part 107 (FAA), and COA. These drones were used for surveying transportation infrastructure such as roads and bridges. They also served to monitor road conditions and backups during storms.

Allstate

Already underway is a drone-based program for insurance. Allstate plans use drones in Texas to assess the damage caused by flooding in New Mexico, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Colorado. The company's drone technology has been tested and it can quickly add money to customers' debit cards in case of a loss. USAA also uses drones in storm-related claims assessments, and they were used for the first times after Hurricane Sandy. Allstate recently used drones throughout Texas, including New Braunfels.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department

MDFR used DJI Mavic Enterprise Dual drones (thermal imaging, spotlight payloads) during the initial search. The drones were also used for general situation monitoring during the night. High-resolution photos of the scene were taken by drones equipped with spotlights and thermal cameras. The area was reconstructed from aerial photos and data.
