Insurance adjusters can help with Hurricane Harvey Damage Assessments by using Drones

Insurance adjusters have been bringing more drones into Texas to assess the damage in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. Although this technology is increasingly being used for damage assessment purposes, its practical application in relief efforts has been limited. Tethered drones hover near hankamer (Texas) looking for damage. Drones are not the only tool that the red cross has to help affected communities.

At&t

AT&T's ongoing work to aid the Texans impacted in Hurricane Harvey has led to AT&T testing drones to provide cellular connectivity and coverage in disaster areas. These drones are more accurate and safer than a maintenance team on the ground. They are also able to report back with photos and HD video, giving first responders a bird's eye view of a cell site. But what is AT&T's drone capable of?

PrecisionHawk

PrecisionHawk Hurricane Harvey drone pilots used DJI Matrice100 multicopter aircrafts equipped with Zenmuse Z30 digital zoom cameras. These cameras can capture amazing photos and videos with a 30x optical zoom. PrecisionHawk pilots had prepared their crews and drones for the disaster by bringing several battery packs and assembling at a utility operation center. These pilots had undergone rigorous training and were well-versed in emergency management, mission planning, and safety procedures.

NCDOT

NCDOT created 15 drone teams to prepare for Hurricane Harvey. NCDOT drones were trained to conduct all flight operations within the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA), Part 107, and COA. These drones were used for surveying transportation infrastructure such as roads and bridges. They also served to monitor road conditions and backups during storms.

Allstate

Already, a drone-based insurance program has been developed. Allstate will use drones to assess flood damage in Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma. The company has already tested drone technology, allowing it to quickly put money back on a customer's debit card in the event of a claim. USAA has used drones to assess storm-related insurance claims for the first time since Hurricane Sandy. Allstate recently used drones to assess storm-related claims in New Braunfels (Texas) and other areas.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department

MDFR used DJI Mavic Enterprise Dual drones with thermal imaging and spotlight payloads during the initial search and rescue. They also used the drones for general situation awareness during the night. High-resolution images of before the tower fell were made possible by using drones equipped to thermal cameras or spotlights. The area was reconstructed from aerial photos and data.

How To

How to Fly Drones at a Beginning Level

A drone is a remotely-controlled aircraft that is used for aerial photography and surveillance. Drone technology has existed since World War II. DJI's Phantom quadcopters became commercially available in 2010. Many types of drones have been made available since then, from beginner-friendly models such as the Parrot AR Drone 2.0, to high-end multi-rotor craft such as the DJI Mavic Pro.

There are many ways to fly a drone.

  1. Remote control - This method uses a control device attached to your hand, which enables you to steer the drone through its flight path. There are two main types of controllers: On/Off switches (like a radio) and joysticks.
  2. Manual Control – This method lets users remotely control the drone by using a smartphone app. The app will give you instructions.
  3. Autonomous Flying - This allows the drone to take over all of the piloting duties. It basically flies autonomously without any human intervention. The drone must be equipped with a camera and sensors that can capture images and data in order to fly autonomously.
  4. Triggered Flight - This method is similar to manual control, except the pilot manually sets up a preprogrammed route, and the drone follows that route until it reaches the endpoint. Once the programmed route is completed, the drone lands automatically and returns back to the base.
  5. Landing Gear- Some drones include landing gear that allows for safe landing if the power goes out or they run out of batteries.
  6. Goggles - Some pilots wear goggles to protect themselves from debris while operating.
  7. Camera – Some drones have cameras, which allow you to take photos or videos from up high.
  8. Obstacles. Some drones can have obstacle avoidance technology that stops them from hitting obstacles.
  9. Speed - Some drones can travel at speeds over 40 mph.
  10. Battery Life - Most drones can last between 20 minutes to 3 hours, depending on how much power you're using.
  11. Some drones have a range of up to 30 miles, depending on their model.
  12. Power source - Some drones require an external power source; others work off internal batteries.
  13. Weight - Some drones can be as light as 1 pound while others can reach 4 pounds.
  14. Size - Drones come in many sizes, from small gadgets that fit in one's hands to large craft that weigh more than 50 lbs.
  15. Price - From high-end models that cost thousands of dollars to low-cost options that start at $100, all drones fall under a certain price category.
